Using some common substances (sugar, salt, epsom salts, iron filings, paraffin wax) students have been investigating the physical properties of different types of bonds. The best part of teaching is when students get to make their own connections and observations, this lab is a great tool for that.
Today in Physical Science students laid out and discovered the trends that can be seen in the patterns of valance electrons on the Periodic Table. Students worked as a class and then teams to discover the trends that can be seen when you look at the table as a whole.

Great first day, met all of my classes and Physical Science jumped in feet first.
Working in groups they whiteboarded all that they knew about the structure of an atom; then constructed a 3D model out of pipe cleaners and other craft supplies that they presented to the class.
